Identifying an unknown tag (in general)

Looking through the code and documentation for this device, I see a bewildering number of commands for handling different sorts of tags.  Getting a useful result requires knowing what kind of tag you're dealing with, and then figuring out the right set of commands to do something useful.

Would it be possible have a command that autodetected any tag within the field of either of the antennas?   This could either take the form of something that looked at the signals from each antenna and tried to determine a modulation technique, or the brute-force approach of trying each demodulation scheme in tune.    (Looking at the code, the latter would require some refactoring, as all of the demodulation commands just output debug text to report failure or success.)

Thoughts?
